Keeping it safe. Keeping it real.

I saw Margaret Cho last night. She was incredible, of course. I respect her so much, because she is the model of a non-traditional activist. Her show is uproariously funny, and also poignant and moving. By broadening our definitions of activism to include humor, art, and play, we have a much better chance of engaging with our audiences. Engagement creates dialogues, both intro- and intra- personal, which render re-framing one’s perceptions easier. Furthermore, it’s fun. Personally, I’d rather go see a comic who makes me think, or go create some art in a public space, than write a letter to my congressperson or go to a protest.

The whole title of her show was “beautiful,” and she talked about how it’s important for everybody, but especially queers, to feel beautiful, since we face so much homophobia every day. I couldn’t find an exact quote for what she said, so this one will have to suffice:

“Ugly. Is irrelevant. It is an immeasurable insult to a woman, and then supposedly the worst crime you can commit as a woman. But ugly, as beautiful, is an illusion.”

Although many of these pictures have been less than flattering lately, posting them doesn’t embarrass me anymore. I still feel beautiful. Whee.

I know, I suck, I’m sorry. It’s been an exceedingly hectic coupla days.

today, my best Bjork impression:

A random person walked by me when I was holding a flower and practicing making faces, before I had my camera out, and gave me a rather odd look. I can’t say I blame him.

I know I’m slacking a little bit. I’m trying to avoid being on the computer late at night, and y’know, doing so seems to be having a beneficial effect on my insomnia. I am taking a picture every day, even if I don’t always get around to posting it.
